Watery eyes

The tears are produced by the lacrimal gland, wash across the eye and then drain down into the nose through the canaliculi, lacrimal sac and nasolacrimal duct. Finding out whether there are excess tears or whether the drains are blocked is the first step.  If the drains are blocked the most sucessful technique is to unblock them surgically by bypassing the narrow nasolacrimal duct and opening the lacrimal sac directly into the nose. This is called a dacryocystorhinostomy and involves either local anaesthetic with sedation or general anaesthetic and one night stay in hospital.
